Finding your way around City Library Collections

City Library is the biggest of the three libraries that comprise Melbourne Library Service. Here are some hints on finding your way around City Library Collections.


Reference
The Reference Collection is available on Level 1. This area is for quiet study.


Nonfiction
The majority of the collection is on Level 1 and is divided into books of standard size and larger books called folios. They appear in the catalogue with an F before the CALL number. The folios run along the side wall of City Library.

In addition some sections of the nonfiction collection at City Library comprising computer books, cook books, language learning and travel are located on the ground floor in separate areas.


Fiction
Fiction is shelved in two places on Level 1. The first section A-K starts at the top of the main stairs near the Information Desk. L-Z continues around the corner.


Large Print
Large print books are located near the start of the fiction collection on Level1.


Magazines
Most of these are located on the Mezzanine Level. The latest copies of art and design magazines are located in the Gallery.


Newspapers
Newspapers for the day and the preceding week are kept behind the main Circulation Desk on the Ground Floor. You can have one at a time by swapping your library card with the desk staff. Newspapers for the preceding month are kept on the Mezzanine Level.


Talking Books
These are recorded books on CD or tape and are located near the entrance to City Library.


DVDs and CDs
These are located on the Mezzanine Level. CDs are organised by genre and DVDs are organised A-L and M-Z for fiction and various areas for nonfiction.


Children’s Collection

Young Adult Collection
Located on the Mezzanine Level.


Chinese, Vietnamese and Indonesian books and DVDs
These are located on Level 1. CDs in these languages are located with the other CDs on the Mezzanine Level.


English Language Learning Collection
This collection is located on the Ground Floor and is part of the Frank Crean Independent Learning Centre.


Language Learning Collection
This located on the Ground Floor. The major languages collected are French, German, Italian and Spanish, however there are resources to learn other languages as well.
