How to Find Items in the Library
Each item in the collection has a spine label with a number on it. This is the CALL number.
The number of each item is listed in the catalogue and is the key to finding which collection the item belongs to and where it is located.
Reference
These items are for use in the library only, and include dictionaries, directories and encyclopaedias. The CALL numbers start with the letters REF.
Nonfiction
Our nonfiction collections are organised according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) System. Books are arranged in subject order from 001 to 999.
The adult section is split into two sections to accommodate larger books. These are known as folios and appear on the catalogue with an F in front of the Dewey number. For example, folios dealing with painting will appear broadly as F759.
Fiction
The books are arranged on the shelves according to the first four letters of the author’s surname.
Paperbacks
There is also paperback fiction on stands. For the most part these are genre books such as crime novels, thrillers, romances, historical romances, science fiction, fantasy and horror. Each paperback has a sticker on the spine representing the genre. They are arranged according to the first letter of the author’s surname.
Large Print
CALL numbers start with the letters LP on the catalogue.
